The sister of Bermondsey boxer Charlie Wynn is set to run the London Winter 10k in February in aid of the stricken Millwall fan.
Emma talks about how her “incredible brother”, welterweight Wynn, turned pro in 2016 and was 2-0, but in a freak training accident, following a spar in 2018 he suffered acute subdural haematoma (a large brain bleed). Charlie needed life saving surgery and part of his skull had to be removed to relieve the pressure on his brain.
Emma’s Go Fund Me page has more information about the severity of the unbeaten Charlie’s injury and about his rehabilitation, on it she says,
“After a while Charlie was able to start communicating with us, firstly using gestures such as raising a finger to say yes. This was incredible and such a huge step forward…
As time went on and Charlie continued to work incredibly hard each and every day, he was soon able to start speaking to us again and to hear him saying our names aloud was one of the best feelings in the world…
The greatest unknown now is the path ahead for Charlie; what will be his limitations? How long will the road to recovery take?
Charlie’s rehabilitation centre is not funded on the NHS all extra physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy sessions have to be privately funded, along with any adjustments that may be needed to his home.”
In Charlie’s own words “I want to get home and to be able to walk”. Despite amazing progression, clearly Charlie still needs a lot of help to be able to achieve this understandable goal. It is heartbreaking to imagine how hard it must have been for him and his family to even come this far, to support the cause and sponsor Emma on her run please click the link below.
