EXCLUSIVE: Darryll Williams On Title Fight Delay

The Frank Warren April 14th card at the O2 has been cancelled, or postponed, in boxing talk. Headlined by undefeated Billy Joe Saunders defending his WBO title against Martin Murray, a hand injury to Billy has meant the card will now take place on June 23rd and has particularly bad implications for a #TeamSouthpawJab member. English super middleweight champion Darryll Williams is undefeated, ten months out of the ring and raring to go. This delay has upset his preparations.

Darryll told Southpaw Jab today that, on hearing the news he was, “Fucking pissed really! Ha ha ha”. Although clearly still in good spirits, the champion is annoyed that the delay has cost him more time out of the ring. “I’ve been going down to Wales [from South London] to train, I got back with my first ever trainer, started yoga, things like that. I was ready to take people out, honestly never felt this great.”

Preparation for the fight had been going well, and Darryll, always a fan (and victor) of a scrap, said he’d been bullying people in sparring. “I won’t mention names, but I’ve been making people quit in sparring, I was on fire.” After a break from the sport, ‘Ferocious’ was ready to go.

With now three more months until the potential defence against similarly undefeated Lennox Clark, was a ticking over fight on the card, perhaps? “ I would like to do something, I’ve done it before though.” It would be good to see Darryll backed over a six rounder, shake off any rust, and be in position to beat an opponent more active of late. As ever, the Team Southpaw Jab Man remains confident.

“I was out of the ring ten months before Smyle, and I still won. These things affect you, but I think I have a certain mentality. I can just get in there.”

Be warned. Ferocious is back!
