On Saturday 15th June in Paisley, Scotland; Luss born boxer Hannah Rankin took on Sarah Curran of Illinois, USA, looking to become Scotland’s first female world champion on a bill dubbed ‘History in the Making’.
Rapped into the ring by Aberdeen’s grime recording artist Ransom FA and draped in Scottish blue; Team Southpaw Jab’s Hannah was moments away from her date with destiny. The wait for the first bell did not faze the American, whose eyes remained transfixed on Hannah, as she paced up and down in the corner of the ring.
The opening rounds saw Sarah Curran evading the majority of the punches being thrown at her, showcasing great movement and footwork, utilising the ring she was starting to feel at home in.
For a moment it looked like the fight could be sliding away from the hometown hero, but with the tank of Curran slowing down and the relentlessness of Rankin continuing, Hannah started to pull back the scorecards. The second half of the fight saw Rankin take the majority of the rounds.
In a fight of two halves, as the final bell rang both fighters rightfully drew applause from the crowd. The decision was announced (96-94) and as Hannah Rankin had her hand raised aloft, the IBO Super-Welterweight belt was fitted proudly around the waist of a boxer whose dream had been fulfilled.
All of Team Southpaw Jab are incredibly proud of and happy for Hannah and Team Rankin. Here’s to more leather!
